## Start with what happened

A family newspaper story opening gives readers a scene to enter: a person, an action, and a place they can understand. Choose the event first. “She has always been generous” states an opinion; “She packed a snack basket for the children before they left” gives you a scene. This guide covers the first sentences, rather than a whole biography or a complete short portrait.

The examples below are entirely fictional. For your newspaper, work from a real note, an explained photograph, or a memory its contributor agrees to share. If all you have is praise, ask, “When did you see her do that?” A small, specific answer gives you something to write about. Keep the contributor’s uncertainty in your notes instead of converting it into a confident opening.

## Orient the reader without listing everybody

Readers need to know who is acting and why this moment belongs in the newspaper. A place matters when it helps them picture the scene. An exact date helps distinguish one event from another, but it is not required when nobody remembers it. Don’t invent a season just to make an undated memory feel more vivid.

Write three working lines: main person, observed action, concrete detail. Add confirmed information that helps explain the action. Relationships should make sense across generations: “her granddaughter Nora” may help more than “Nora” when distant relatives will read the edition. You don’t need every guest’s name in the opening. Introduce other people when they do something in the story, instead of making the first sentence a roll call.

## Before and after: the stuck table leaf

Fictional note: “Margaret is hosting the family. She brings out a table leaf. Her grandson helps, but it gets stuck. She ends up seating the children at a small table in the kitchen.” Vague opening: “Margaret has a heart of gold and always knows how to welcome everyone with joy.” Readers can’t see the problem or what she did.

Rewritten opening: “In her kitchen, Margaret finds a place for everyone, even when the table leaf refuses to slide. She seats the children at their own table.” The actions show hospitality without announcing a grand compliment. A quieter version is “Margaret gathers the family in her kitchen and sets a separate table for the children.” Choose whichever treatment fits the actual memory you collected.

## Save the background for paragraph two

After that fictional opening, the next paragraph could explain that the table has hosted family meals for years, if that detail belongs to the real account. It can also identify who remembered the incident. “Her grandson remembers…” separates a reported memory from something the writer witnessed.

Don’t put quotation marks around words you have only summarized. Inventing “Nothing will stop me!” to give Margaret character creates a statement she never made. Use exact words when you have them and the speaker approves, or describe the action without dialogue. The published 22routes guide on preparing photos and stories, linked below, helps organize that material. An opening cannot solve a gap in the source by adding imaginary weather, emotions, or conversation that reads well on the page.

## Read the opening with its headline and photo

Read the first sentences aloud without the headline. Can someone tell who is doing what? Remove a phrase such as “As we all know” if it gives no useful orientation, and supply the missing information instead. Then restore the headline. If the opening repeats it word for word, replace the repetition with a detail from the scene. A caption can carry a confirmed date without crowding the opening.

Try the text in the English-language 22routes 80th birthday newspaper linked in the resources. This digital Canva template has 12 pages; arrange printing separately and replace age references if needed. The actual space helps you decide what to cut or move. Preserve the person, action, and useful detail before shortening anything that makes the scene understandable.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you begin a family newspaper article?

Start with one specific event and confirmed information. Say who acts, what happens, and any location that helps readers picture it, then add background. Read the passage back to the person who contributed the memory before sharing it.

### Does the first sentence need every detail?

No. Readers need a clear scene, rather than your entire note sheet. A date, guest list, or the history of the location can wait if the opening makes sense without them.
